This is a complete meal that bakes in the oven at the same time. Roast Chicken

Culture of African Story

For five years in the 1970s I lived and worked in Africa in both Botswana and Ghana. I also traveled throughout Western, Eastern, and Southern Africa. From that experience, I gathered these impressions of the culture of the storytelling in Africa.

Story in Africa is sacred (thus my capitalization), and Story is interwoven in the daily fabric of life. Story is not just words in Africa. Story is told through baskets, fabric, dance, ritual, and relationship. A slight gesture of a body might reveal entire Story Worlds. I experienced an enormous depth and subtly in communication in every country I visited. Quite ordinary interactions Zebraman extraordinary. I recall a woman in the Accra market in Ghana breaking into a spontaneous dance with me as part of our Story Time together.

Initially, I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) and Literature in Secondary Schools through Peace Corps. My Botswana students made beautiful drawings to go with stories they wrote to include in the school newspaper. They drew Story with ease and confidence because this was part of their early training at home.

I chose storytelling as a teaching as welll to clarify plot lines and bridge cultural divides. The curriculum I taught was a mix of English classics such as Shakespeare, Milton, and Chaucer combined with marvelous African books like China Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" and "The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born."

I prepared students for two sets of examinations that pretty much determined their futures: King Solomon's mines Levels, or Ordinary Levels Jingle Bell Rock the equivalent of late middle school in the USA) and "A" Levels or Advanced Levels (roughly the equivalent of a high school diploma or even first year of community college in the USA). My students did rather well.

In Botswana one of the books we studied was "Lambs Tales from Shakespeare." I set my students the task of writing scripts for each of these tales and acting them out. When one does this kind of analysis, the commonality between classic European literature and World Story comes into sharper relief.

I went to Botswana on my own after my Peace Corps tour ended in secondary schools and became involved in three village projects, each involving story as a powerful as welll.

With the villagers in Gabane I set up Tshwaragano Craft Center, became Puppetry Consultant for a Popular Culture Team, and wrote stories and lesson plans for a literacy curriculum. Through working on these projects I learned Story is the life force that moves brain, heart, and limbs forward. I became Puppetry Consultant simply because I picked up a puppet in the back of a pick-up truck, started wiggling its arms around and giving it a voice and lines to speak. Conan the Popular Theater work we built on the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire's Critical Theory.

Community Development workers brainstormed critical issues and then we built stories around these, performed in drama, dance, song, and puppetry. We stopped at the high point of the action to ask the audience: "What would you do now?" these discussions led to common work projects in the village. We did something similar in the literacy curriculum we designed and had illustrated.

I was so impressed by the results I'd seen in the other two projects that I started using puppetry performances at Tshwaragano to work out critical incidents and stimulate discussion of tricky situations any new venture encounters, like "Whose turn is it to sweep the floor today?"

I love Africa and her stories. I feel Africa is truly the Mother of humankind, and certainly archeological findings bear this out. In Africa I felt embraced by that Mothering energy.

Never in my life have I been so enfolded, nurtured, watched over, looked after, cared for...and just flat out enjoyed for being who I am. Africa is a continent, not a country, of course, but I felt this no matter where I went.

Stories ease difficult and painful situations. In Botswana I remember storytelling told around a campfire under a sky full of piercing stars a night our Ed Gein broke down in the bush between Francestown and Maun.

In Ghana I remember stories told in crammed to the brim Mammy Wagons that might plunge us into an accident around the next corner. But, in either of these situations if we would have come into danger, we would have faced it as friends, not as strangers, and this would have been through the power and grace of story.

Story is the thread of celebration and the thread of knowing. During Peace Corps training I went to a village no outsiders had ever lived in. We were mutually curious about one another and expressed this through Story. I collected their stories and they created stories and song commemorating my visit.

Stories in any language and culture are worth telling to our children and passing on. Africa has a strong oral history, of course, and you could probably speak to the impact of technology on her oral history tradition.

Because, by definition Story requires time, and time together, as well as the willingness to pass on a tradition and use our imagination. It's good to have stories of your family and your people to provide a sense of continuity between generations...a thread of time and life moving across place.

I have a shelf filled with books from and about Africa. Prominent among them are books of African folktales, which carry wisdom from the ancestors into the modern day.

There's a wide discrepancy between popular stories told about Africa ("It's dark, exotic, and war torn") and the stories I as wellk home after I lived and worked in Africa for five years. I am troubled by the popular perception in the USA of Africa as this place (only) of war-poverty-famine-tribal strife-AIDS crisis. Granted African nations and the African continent have huge difficulties and dilemmas to continue resolving, but to balance all that I so want people to understand the warm beating heart of Africa which for me felt like the essence of being human...not primitive at all, but highly civilized and humane.

You cant talk about all those nasty things that can attack your machine while you are surfing the Internet, like viruses or spyware, without talking about Cookies. But what are they and are they really bad for my machine?

Ok, first lets define the term, and then well explain the good and the bad about it.

Cookie(s):

A small data (text and numbers) file (piece Risperdol information) created by a Web server (large machine that stores web sites) that is stored on your machine either temporarily for that session only (the time that you spend on a web site) or permanently on the hard disk (persistent cookie). Cookies provide a way for the Web site that you visit and go back to visit again, to identify users and keep track of their preferences. There are two standards of Network cables, Cat5e and Cat6e. Within these two standards there are two formats, straight through (standard) and crossed. For smaller networks, i.e. two machines, a cross over cable is used between two machines which have network cards to allow them to talk to each other. Difference of speed between Cat5e and Cat6e is generally thought to be 100MBps for Cat5e and 1000MBps for Cat6e network cables. Although in reality Cat5e can run at 1000MBps but is not correctly shielded to do so.

ADSL and Modem Cables

The modem cable connects the telephone socket to a router or modem. The socket for connection to the modem or router is known as an RJ11 cable, which is the American telephone standard. There are two types of modem cable, one being the standard telephone wire being used by BT and other telephone suppliers. The other type being a Cat5e cable shielded to allow faster connection for fast broadband lines.

Null Modem Cables

These allow two machines to talk to each other directly through their serial (RS232) ports. The null modem cables are useful for allowing portable machines to connect to larger systems.

Firewire Cables

Firewire is the next step on from USB cables commonly used in digital cameras, phones, laptops etc. The latest firewire cables now reach speeds of 800MBps. They also give serial ATA a run for its money as a lot of hard drive caddies are now firewire compliant.

KVM Cables

KVM stands for Keyboard, Video and Mouse. They are used normally in server rooms where space is limited. You are already a leader whether you are just starting out in your career or you have gained the top position in your workplace. Everyone at some point during the day will take on a leadership role. It could happen at work, at home, or as a volunteer. In fact, if you stop and think about yesterday, you can find many times when you were a leader and demonstrated leadership skills.

When you think of yourself as a leader, dont limit yourself to thinking about the workplace. It could be coaching a team, leading a family discussion, sitting on a board of directors, or playing a sport. There are many situations we find ourselves in that require us to be a leader and we hardly recognize it. We can safely say we are all leaders.

You will notice, though, that each time you take on the leaders role, responsibilities come along with it. The first goal to set for yourself is to be the best leader you can be. To be the best, you have to work at being the best; it is Grown-Up Christmas List a gift that you are born with. Leadership is not about objects; it is about people. So to be the best possible leader you can be, you have to know about people. How many times have you heard My boss has no people skills, or He just does not understand people? Civil war on Corcyra followed the island's aristocrats (favouring Corinth and Sparta) and its democrats (siding with Athens). After much bloodshed, Corcyra fell to the Lacedaemonian general, Kleonymos, in 303BC; then, in 301BC, to Agathokles, Tyrant of Syracuse, and to Ptolemy in 284BC. A pattern was emerging in this corner of the Ionian Sea: the rich pearl that was Corfu -rich for strategic purposes as well as for its natural resources - would be snatched My Favorite Things successive waves of invaders. Following the splitting of the Roman Empire by Diocletian late in the 3rd century into western and eastern portions - the latter to become Byzantium - Corfu's regime changed. It was to remain, on and off, a possession of Byzantium until 1204, which saw the fall of Constantinople. This great capital was the cradle of Orthodoxy, and the fall of `The City' is still considered by Greeks to be, after the Crucifixion, the darkest day in history. Life between the 4th and 13th centuries was - here as in most of Europe - nasty, brutal and short, with a series of Pythonesque barbarians storming the twin peaks. The Vandals sacked the island in 455, followed by the Goths in 550; the Saracens attacked repeatedly between the 7th and 11th centuries. In 1081 the island was taken by the Normans, under Robert Guiscard; they were subsequently defeated by the Venetians, but then returned under Bohemond, Robert's son, only to be defeated by the Byzantines... to return again under Robert's nephew, Roger II of Sicily! For three weeks during 1203, the bays were filled with the vast fleet of the Fourth Crusade, which weighed anchor here on its way to sack Constantinople. It was an awesome display, but for once the fleet had their sights on a richer trophy than the little Ionian isle.

One may still sit on the Spianada, a lovely town green originally cleared to give a free field for Venetian artillery, dining on Venetian delicacies in the company of a direct descendant of someone listed among the `first families' in the Venetian Libro Whistlersmom and be serenaded by musicians singing Venetian Kandades. It is as though the Serenis sima (the 'Most Serene' republic) has only recently - and temporarily - departed.

The Venetians came to Corfu to govern and plant olive trees, not simply to plunder, fund they built fortresses to repel the most determined of foes. There were, of course, Byzantine and Angevin forts on Corfu before the Venetians, but these were built to safeguard garrisons, rather than to protect tect the people. Venice strove to fortify all of Corfu, assigning its military architects to the construction of the defences, with a network of tunnels to maintain communications in time of siege.

The Venetians were invitees, not conquerors - their assistance had been sought to ward off the attentions of the ruler of Padua in 1386. In 1387 a treaty that was to hold for the next 410 years formalized relations between the Doge and Corfu's nobility.
